The Self-Immolation of the Party of Lincoln: Hate Burns Fast and Leaves But Ash

“The party of Lincoln shouldn’t become the party of Jefferson Davis. Or is that where we’re headed?” – Chris Matthews

“Tombstone hand
And a graveyard mine
Just twenty two
And I don’t mind dying.
Who do you love?
Who do you love?” – Elias McDaniel

“Autism and Dementia Are God’s Punishments for LGBT Rights”- Republican Candidate, Susanne Atanus, 9th District/Illinois

To quote Bob Dylan, for 21st century Republicans, “the times, they are a-changin’” – unfortunately, they’re going backwards. The GOP of today is a political party of yesteryear, steeped in a nostalgia that conjures up faulty and malicious memories of a mostly non-existent, pre-Civil War golden age. They long for a time when women and African-Americans knew their rightful place, immigration was exceedingly difficult and primarily restricted to white Western Europeans, and homosexuality not yet the late 20th century immoral, liberal invention they believe it to be. Ignorant, anti-education, anti-science, anti-women, anti-gay, anti-black, anti-immigrant, anti-minority (maybe even Auntie Mame) such is the platform of the Republican Party in the era of America’s first Black President – a proud party of hate (in the name of God, of course.)

When you despise the fellow inhabitants of this precious and fragile home we call Earth, for the very finite and unpredictably limited time that you find yourself drawing breath - those with whom you share your life, your love, your happiness, your joy, your sadness, your sorrow, your ups, your downs, your overs and outs – what contentment can you feel? Is there satisfaction in bearing affection for only money, power, and oneself? Is there enjoyment in pilfering meals and nourishment from impoverished children, refusing women rights over their own health choices and bodies, or preventing those perceived as being “different” or “lesser” from expressing their opinions at the ballot box?  Has the Far Right demonstrated anything in either behavior or history to make one doubt, should they somehow gain the demonic power of a succubus, that they would show any hesitation, or experience anything but pure ecstasy, in applying the deadly life-force and soul extinguishing kiss, if only to relieve themselves of the ceaseless torment of having to share terra firma acreage with moderates, liberals and other such vile fiends?

“Hyperbole,” you say? “Equally partisan and odious opinions, just from an opposite ideology,” you claim? Perhaps, but let us now present some examples of this (non)thinking with an assortment of quotes from some malevolent mouths and minds, and then let the judging commence, for the reality of the Right so often far exceeds frivolous fictionalization or the absurdity and exaggeration of satire. Unearthing detestable declarations from prominent members of the GOP is as easy as finding the haystack around the needle - like clouds, grains of sand, and unintended Palin pregnancies, they are legion, and the very oxygen on which the Right Wing subsists.

Loathsome Thoughts of Little Minds

“I’m past impeachment. It’s time to arrest and hang him (President Obama) high.” - Republican Candidate, Joshua Black, Florida House of Representatives

“(Texas gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis) is a gold-digger who found a sugar daddy” – Ann Coulter, Lilith reincarnation

“…what we’re gonna do is turn Detroit into an Indian reservation (for Black people)…build a fence around it and then throw in the blankets and the corn.” — Republican Oakland County (MI) Executive Director, L. Brooks Patterson

“The Wife is to voluntarily submit to her husband.” Rep. Steve Pearce, Republican, New Mexico

“I had a call this afternoon from Idaho, the gentleman said, ‘If I give you 250,000 Marines to go to Washington, will you lead them?  I said, ‘Yes, I will, I’ll surround the White House and I’ll surround the Capitol building, but it’s going to take physical presence to do things… I don’t want to be criticized for starting a revolution, but I’d certainly head it if we had to. We all love a good fight if it’s worth it, right?” - Paul Vallely, Retired Major General and Senior Military Analyst, Fox News

"...even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, it is something that God intended to happen." – Richard Mourdock, Republican Senate Candidate, Indiana

”Feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream of society.” - Rush Limbaugh, radio talk show host, brain-addled drug addict, virgin, leader of the Republican Party

“We should have never turned (the vote) over to women... They can't handle stress. They can’t handle anything.” -  Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, Fox News contributor

"Rape victims should make the best of a bad situation." – Rick Santorum, Republican Presidential Candidate, Mental Midget, 15th Century Time Traveler

“… the institution of slavery that the black race has long believed to be an abomination upon its people may actually have been a blessing in disguise… wouldn’t life for blacks in America today be more enjoyable and successful if they would only learn to appreciate the value of a good education?” - Jon Hubbard, Republican, Arkansas House of Representatives

The Party of White Hot Hate

They lie to discredit science
They lie as a way to win
They lie to squash defiance
Claim defense of self-reliance
Making pacts for Christian compliance
More than happy with racist alliance
Then forgive themselves of every sin

Ideology – regression
With minority oppression
The poor mired in depression
Free speech lost to their suppression
Corporation ruling by succession
Help yourself to any possession
Truth a casualty of vile spin

Falsely chosen expositions
Lead to partisan positions
Accusations and suspicions
Damning any oppositions

So poison our waters and call us free
Constrain our daughters, feign liberty
Suppress the vote, kill equality
Days of strange fruit hanging from a poplar tree

They disrupt us
May corrupt us
Known in Latin as Intelligence Interruptus.
And Reince Prebus
Cries “believe us
After all, we’re the party of Jesus
‘Do unto others
Before they do unto you!'
'Hate one another
As I have hated you’”

As abomination and abhorrence of others is so obvious, it begs Bo Diddley’s musical question, “Who Do You Love?”
